I’m a fan of “independently owned and operated”.
Through my research, I have asked experts and scholars what is a better word than single, and they are all kind of stumped. The problem is that single is a synonym for unmarried. And in a culture that makes marriage the preferred state of relationship, the opposite is negative. Therefore, we have a cultural bias against single people. So what’s a better phrase to use that frames singleness as a blessing and not a curse?

Without knowing it (I’m sure), this comic does two things: he uses a marriage normative example to name a base problem of marriage normativity.

M/n is the express or inadvertent teaching that marriage is expected based on misinterpretation of Scripture. The most common way that preachers do this is by using their families as sermon illustrations resulting in a false understanding that a successful marriage is one with healthy children, financial prosperity, and overt happiness.

Preachers are often under pressure to “say something new” which leads to pulling out an easy story of his family. (Yes, male preachers do this more than female preachers.) This is how m/n is an inadvertent wounding. Sometimes it is small and innocuous; sometimes the example digs in with both intensity and length. The solution is not avoid talking about your family (though they would probably like that) but to think: is this the best example of the point I’m trying to make? What would a single woman hear in this story?

So, pastors, do better.
